the two short EPs avalaible for free here have been sculpted by my good friend "le med", a young local beatmaker working on samples taken from artists like the meters (for those i recognized) isaac hayes, billy paul or the delfonics...

tony allen-black voices revisited-10 years anniversary

most of us know tony allen, one of the greatest drummer of this century, and certainly many of us have heard about his work, new or old, because of the "black voices" album.

the resurrection LP we could say, it's a fact that his collaboration with doctor L and comet records has been proeminent into his world re-recognition and his comeback in front of the scene, years after his last LP's NEPA or afrobeat express.

listening to this shit was like a revelation to me, and even if i already heard about tony's work and playing when i've been listening to fela's anthology around thirteen years ago, i wasn't able in this time to dig more on his discography, and i've been stroke, litteraly, by his powerful drums playing and the surprising but very well orchestred blend of afrobeat, jazz, electro and dub put together on this lp.

and then i went diggin' on tony allen, fela, afrobeat stuff, and, thanks god, on all the afro-funk, afrobeat, afrojazz stuff made avalaible easily with the internet, the bloggers, and the great reissue work done by labels like soundway and others.

years after this effort tony allen is still on the road playing drums there and there, even if he's passed his 70 years old, keeping on spreading his so particular afro-vibes, afro-grooves through the planet, and we can celebrate him by listening and dancing to the remixed tracks on this LP.

give thanks to the master, soul-drummer number one, the one and only tony allen.

simply one of the best nigerian bassist, playing with men like victor olaya or even the great fela kuti, he's also, with joni hasstrupp, an original founder of "monomono" well known nigerian band, who released two killer lps "give the beggar a chance" and "dawn of awareness".

he will also be on tour this year, in france i heard about two dates, one during the "la defense jazz festival" (and it's free!) and one in the wonderful city of sète, in the non-less wonderful venue of "le theatre de la mer" (an outdoor theatre, old vauban military fort, with a "magnifique seaview when you are in front of the scene!!!) where he will be playing the first part of the seun kuti new-album-launching show.

In early 1965, just as the West African High-life scene
was becoming rather a drag, and everybody was bored
with it all, the revolutionary sound of
Fela Ransome Kuti & His Koola Lobitos burst upon us.

This fantastic sound now as a permanent place in
West African Music - and is rapidly becoming popular in
other parts of the world.

A strikingly original Musicia, Fela Ransome Kuti was
trained at the Trinity College of Music, London.
From the very first, he was influenced by those
"greats" of the jazz world - Thad Jones and Miles Davis.

He gained much practical Experience doing spare time
"gigs" with London-based jazz-men.

A very talented Musician - Fela's customary instrument
is the trumpet (did you ever doubt it!) but he is also
swinging pianist and rave vocalist. He is also composer
and arranger. A Musicians' Musician in fact.

To maintain his reputation as West Africa's leading
Musician, Fela is continuously experimenting with varying
forms of High-life and other exotic rythmic patterns.
The result of those experiments are evident on all the
numbers of this LP.

Even the old familiar numbers have that new and original
High-life tempo that Fela has made his own.

Many so-called original bands have found fleeting success
on the West African scene - only to fade quickly into
obscurity. Because of his creative talent, his continual
search for new sound and new musical expression, we can be
sure that Fela, and his music, are going to be with us a
very long time indeed.

There was a time in Philadelphia when you could turn on the radio and hear one great new song after another. There was a time when a funky Philly instrumental 45 made the top ten charts at r&b stations like WDAS, WHAT and even rock stations like WIBG. There was a time in Philadelphia when you could go to the Record Museum to the 10th & Chestnut and buy the latest funky 45, instead of a low-fat mocha chai latte.
In these days of crack heads, fast food, and non-stop cell phon yacking, SUV-driving yuppies, it is really great to know that Philadelphia made some good funky music with real musicians, songwriters, producers and arrangers. Don't forget the local Philly dj's who made it all happen: Sonny Hopson, Jimmy Bishop, Butterball, Carl Helm, Joe Niagar, Jerry Blavat, Georgie Woods, Kae Williams and many, many others.
This CD is dedicated to the late Ben Krass whose legendary 9th & South Street store outfitted many of the Philly groups who appear on this compilation. Ben Krass was responsible for putting up hiw own money to start Philly record labels like Excel, Gamble and South Street. He was also an excellent soul singer, recording under the names The Boss Man, Knights & Arthur and B.K. Marcus.

Dimitri From Paris - Get Down With The Philly Sound (2010)

BBE Records proudly presents its 5th and arguably most exciting compilation with the French dj and ambassador of disco, Dimitri from Paris. This compilation focuses on Dimitri's essential disco era tracks - made in Philadelphia, that feature the core of the rhythm section that created and defined the sound of the genre.
For this compilation Dimitri has exclusively reworked 5 tracks from the original multitrack tapes of Gamble and Huff with a further 4 being edited from the original 2 track stereo masters.
It should be noted that nearly all of the disco output from Philadelphia between 1973-1980 featured the work of the same studio musicians known as The Family, MFSB (Mother, Father, Sister, Brother), The Salsoul Orchestra, Baker - Harris -Young Productions, The John Davis Monster Orchestra or the Montana Sextet depending on who the recording was for. The classic line up of musicians included Karl Chambers and Earl Young (Founder of The Trammps and creator of the disco drum pattern which laid the template for every dance record since) on drums; Norman Harris, Roland Chambers, Bobby Eli (Original MFSB member), and TJ Tindall on guitar; Winnie Wilford and Ronnie Baker on bass; Vince Montana (vibes/arranger and founder of the Salsoul Orchestra) and Larry Washington on percussion and Leon Huff, Thom Bell and Ron Kersey on keyboards. Don Renaldo taking care of strings and horns featuring soloist John Bonnie Rocco Bene on Trumpet. Last but not least the remixers and Tom Moulton (Pioneer of the Disco Mix, the 12 inch vinyl format, the break down sections of records and supplier of missing masters for this compilation) who influenced the popularity of songs with his legendary mixes. For Salsoul Walter Gibbons was the owners choice. Honorable mentions go to Larry Levan and Shep Pettibone for their contributions in this field.
These guys were the bridge between the labels and the club dancers and understood how to make a record work in a club.
Undisputedly, as producer's Thom Bell and Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia soul sound evolved from the simpler arrangements of the late 1960s into a style featuring lush strings, thumping basslines and sliding hi-hat rhythms; Philadelphia gave birth to and defined the brand new Disco genre. The anthemic The Love I Lost is recognised as the first commercial disco record and was recorded at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia in 1973. Recording engineer, Joe Tarsia founded Sigma Sound in 1968 where virtually of all the disco recordings on Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International, Salsoul, Philly World, Gold Mind, Atlantic were made, thereby maintaining the unique sound of Philadelphia. Located at 212 N. 12th Street in Philadelphia, it was the second studio in the USA to offer 24-track recording and the first in the country to use console automation. David Bowie
recorded his Young Americans album at this legendary studio as was Dusty Springfields - A Brand New Me, while Elton John's 1977 Philadelphia sessions were in such demand recently that they provided a hit single ('Are You Ready For Love') and CD re-issue 3 decades after the recordings were first made.
By 1975, Philadelphia International and the Philadelphia soul and disco genre's it helped define had largely eclipsed Motown and the Motown Sound in popularity and Gamble and Huff were the premiere producers of soul with nearly 200 gold and platinum records to their credit. Salsoul capitalized on the success of the sound by employing the same musicians whilst focusing on club music predominantly.
In a recent Blues and Soul interview Kenny Gamble admits to passing over Prince's demo. Other acts for whom Philly collaborations didn't happen were Miles Davis, Bob Marley, Barry White and Earth Wind and Fire. Time simply didn't allow these to happen.
Notable acts rushed to Philadelphia to capture the sound. Ex Motown cohorts The Jacksons and Eddie Kendricks utilized the above classic line of musicians up to embrace the new sound and extend their careers. Simultaneously, Salsoul Orchestra and the John Davis Orchestra were essentially basically a moniker core rhythm section of MFSB and recorded several disco hits outside of the PIR umbrella.
Now for the first time ever Gamble and Huff have given a label access to the multi track tapes of some Philly International platinum selling classics such as The Love I Lost, Bad Luck featuring the vocals of the late great Teddy Pendergrass, the first black male to release 5 consecutive platinum albums in the United States.
Dimitri's selection on CD1 traces the evolution of the 70's disco groove from the first ever disco hit record, to the rejuvenation of the Jackson 5's career. Interspersed with obscurities such as Charles Mann to the magnificent Teddy Pendergrass, Philly International's answer to Marvin Gaye. CD2 of the compilation pays homage to the original creators and innovators of the remix and extended edits with reworkings exclusively by Dimitri from Paris.
This tribute to the creators of disco is presented on a limited edition 10,000 copies double cd. Multiple deluxe vinyl exclusively featuring Dimitris remixes and edits.

So you already know what to expect, Cymarshall Law with his unique flow + Skit Slam in a perferct shape + the Swedens finest producers The Beatnikz with some of the best beats of the indie market.

All the Hipnott Records fans, who use to listen to artists like Spectac & Amiri, should support this release on June 22nd. Since 2009 Hipnott Records brings a unique hip hop sound made by some of the most interesting indie artists in activity, in the digi-era, Hipnott Records is trying to give visibility to the worldwide concept of hip hop, and this second volume of "Freedom" is the proof, a great collaboration between USA artists and European producers for more then a hour of hip hop that will not dissapoint you in any way.
